Virginia Tech Shooting: Why It Doesn't Affect You

April 17, 2007. It's the day after the shooting of the 32 students at Virginia Tech by some stupid asshole. While his actions were disgraceful, the response of people has thoroughly pissed me off. Today, some woman from VT gave a speech about how the school would "press on", using phrases like, "We are the Hokies!" Shut up bitch. You're not a victim. You aren't leading victims, and this isn't a goddamned pep rally! Who the fuck are you? Some bitch, that's who. This isn't a time for fucking school spirit. It's a time for the families of the dead to mourn. You're out of the equation now. Sure, it happened at your school. Maybe you could have been shot. But guess what. You weren't. It's not about you, or the other students anymore, really. Maybe students that were good friends with those who were killed, but that's where it ends. Sure, the experience was traumatic for those present to see the students shot, but not for those all the way across campus. Point still stands that you're treating this like a pep rally. Step out bitch, your work here is done. Stop using press coverage to push your bullshit and get your 15 minutes of fame.

That bullshit aside, let's look at what other bullshit this tragic event has spawned. Flipping through channels, I saw a bullshit conversation about Virginia gun laws on MSNBC. These two assholes were essentially blaming the lax Virginia firearm regulations for the shootings. Bullshit. Anyone can get a gun in any state and pull off something like this. Fuck, I own a gun. If I so felt compelled to kill a lot of people, I could. If someone gave a shit about gun laws, I'm relatively sure that they might care a little about the fact that mass murder is kind of illegal too.

So now we're exploiting tragedy to get air-time for ill-informed political agendas. Great. Air-time to also be filled with grab-asstic debates that will only be watched by people who pretend to give a damn just because it's all over the news (i.e. everyone stupid).

Yes, this was a horrible tragedy. Do I care? To an extent. I'm not ignorant of it and I'm not completely un-sympathetic towards the victims and their families. But here's the shit that I'm getting that mainstream America isn't: I fully realize that this has shit-nothing to do with me. I'm not involved. I don't know anyone who was. It's the same as the Terry Schiavo bullshit. Mind your own goddamned business and leave the families be. Shut the fuck up and go back to you own life. Cut this sympathetic bullshit. These people don't need the sympathy of Joe Nobody to help them get by. Especially since they know that in a few weeks you won't care anyway. Cut the foreplay and skip straight to the not-caring. Go ahead and act like the selfish prick that everyone knows you are. Hey, it's okay. Everyone else is one too.

Also, what's with this bullshit NBC pulled? Why the hell would you air every bit of material sent to you by the shooter specifically for you to air it? That's fucking stupid. Why, NBC, are you doing exactly what a mass murderer wanted you to do? I lost all respect I had for NBC when they did this. Not that I respect any media source anyway, but I will certainly never turn to NBC for any sort of news ever again. They showed a complete lack of reverence towards this event. And for that, and complying with a mass murderer, I say: Fuck you, NBC.
